Over 1,000 women flew military aircraft in WWII as Women Air Force Service Pilots, or WASP. Author Margaret DiBenedetto is the daughter of WASP, Ruth Franckling Reynolds. Ruth grew up delivering milk to the residents of Woodstock and earned her pilot license in Kingston, becoming the first female commercial pilot in Ulster County. During her time as a WASP, Ruth ferried almost every type of WWII transport and combat aircraft from manufacturing plants to air bases around the country. By incorporating past aviation history with present-day, strong, female role models, DiBenedetto wrote her novel, Silver Dollar Girls, with the hope of educating a wider, younger audience about the WASP and their role in WWII. Come experience the WASP program through the eyes of a pilot’s daughter.
