Local Color: Paintings, Prints, and Portraits from the Ulster County Historical Society
For over 166 years, the Ulster County Historical Society has been gathering the stories — and the art — of this remarkable place. This season, we open the vault. Local Color brings together paintings, prints, and portraits from the UCHS permanent collection, some rarely publicly displayed, offering an intimate look at Ulster County through the eyes of the artists who knew it best. Among the highlights: Francesco Anelli’s luminous 1841 portrait of the three Hasbrouck children — Louis, Remsen, and Julia — a window into one of Ulster County’s most storied families.
From sweeping Hudson Valley landscapes to intimate local portraits, from legend-rich scenes to quiet depictions of everyday life, these works reveal a county observed, imagined, and deeply loved. As the oldest county historical society in New York State, we’ve spent decades stewarding this visual heritage — and now we invite you to see it.
2026 Sunday Salon Series Cultural Mosaic: Stories of Arrival, Survival, and Belonging
This year’s Sunday Salon Series takes the long view of Ulster County history, exploring the sweep of migration to and from our region. From Indigenous peoples through today’s newest arrivals, waves of people have come, departed, and transformed this place — some by choice, some by force, some seeking refuge, some seeking opportunity. Together, their stories create the cultural mosaic that is Ulster County today.
Programs run Sundays, 2:00–3:30pm, June through November, mostly at the Bevier House. The 2026 season is coming together now — sign up for our newsletter to be the first to know when programs are announced.
