“In Defiance – Runaways from Slavery in New York’s Hudson River Valley 1735 – 1831” – Author Book Talk

July 28 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

"In Defiance" bookcover

Runaway ads were the first published slavery narratives—told by masters. In recent decades scholars have learned to read them closely for individuals’ stories as well as to aggregate them for the purposes of social history. In Defiance does both. Co-author and New Paltz Town Historian, Susan Stessin-Cohn, will discuss the research that went into writing the book and some of the stories that unfolded.
