SUMMARY:"Women on Wheels: How Gilded Age Women Found Freedom Through Bicycling"
DESCRIPTION:Ellen Gruber Garvey joins us through the Humanities NY Public Speaker Program \nWhen women and girls first rode bicycles in large numbers in the 1890s\, they celebrated their new freedom to move around in the world. Susan B. Anthony said she stood and rejoiced\, “every time I see a woman ride by on a wheel…the picture of free\, untrammeled womanhood.” She thought bicycling had “done more to emancipate women than anything else in the world.” Is it surprising that conservatives panicked at visions of women riding alone\, with other women\, or with unsuitable men\, and campaigned to stop them? \nBicycling women did not want to give up their new mobility\, and there were plenty of arguments back and forth. Some claimed that women would damage themselves by acquiring a “bicycle face\,” or would get sexual pleasure from bicycling — and thus ruin their reproductive capacities. Although this seems like something that happened long ago\, women\, especially\, are often still discouraged from physical activity and mobility in the US and in other countries. \nDuring this talk\, Ellen Gruber Garvey will invite the audience to discuss ways they were encouraged to participate in physical activity or discouraged from it\, and how they responded. (For a large audience\, we can first do this in small groups\, or through writing.) We will consider how the automobile\, which followed the bicycle as an agent of individual mobility\, has reduced Americans’ physical activity. \nEllen is Professor of English at New Jersey City University\, where she co-edits the journal Transformations: The Journal of Inclusive Scholarship and Pedagogy. She recently taught for a semester in Paris\, as Visiting Professor at the Université Paris 8/Vincennes-St. Denis. Her doctorate is from the University of Pennsylvania\, her MA from the University of Massachusetts\, and her BA from Empire State College\, SUNY. Her recent book\, Writing with Scissors: American Scrapbooks from the Civil War to the Harlem Renaissance\, has won four awards\, including the Society of American Archivists’ Waldo Gifford Leland Award and the Institute for Humanities Research Award. \nThis is a free event\, sponsored by Humanities New York \n \n

SUMMARY:Unearthing our Past: The Archaeology of Kingston\, NY
DESCRIPTION:As far back as 12\,000 years ago\, Native American tribes thrived here in Ulster County – and thanks to ongoing archeological digs\, we are still learning about their lives. Guiding college students through these important excavations is SUNY New Paltz professor Joseph E. Diamond\, Ph.D.\, who will deliver a lecture on their findings for The Ulster County Historical Society.\nProfessor Diamond will present an overview of local archaeological sites that have been investigated within the city of Kingston since the early 20th century\, followed by a discussion of the most significant sites and what they tell us about the earliest native settlers to this area. He will review evidence gleaned from these sites that document Native American occupation beginning as early as 12\,000 years ago and lasting until contact with the Dutch in 1609. He will also discuss unearthed Colonial-era Dutch and English materials – and later industrial materials from the 19th century. Prof. Diamond will point out Native American artifacts currently on display at the Bevier House Museum from the Ulster County Historical Society Society’s permanent collection.\nJoseph E. Diamond is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at SUNY New Paltz. He holds an MA from New York University\, and a Ph.D. from SUNY Albany. Prof. Diamond’s area of focus includes historic and prehistoric archaeology\, prehistoric ceramic analysis\, historic glass and ceramic analysis. Peer-reviewed articles have appeared in the New York State Archaeological Association Bulletin\, The North American Archaeologist\, Archaeology of Eastern North America\, Northeast Anthropology\, Journal of Middle Atlantic Archaeology\, Current Research in the Pleistocene\, Northeast Historical Archaeology and a recent piece on the Late Prehistoric Period in New York State by the New York State Museum. \n$5 for UCHS members and $10 for non-members

In the spring of 2015\, Ellenville Public Library & Museum and Ulster County Historical Society joined forces to develop a year- long celebration honoring Ulster County’s women’s history. There will be two events surrounding this celebration. The first is a special exhibit titled “Ulster County Women of Note\,” highlighting Ulster County women\, from all walks life\, who exhibited great commitment to their communities and their causes. \nIn the spirit of collaboration\, organizations such as schools\, libraries\, historic site and societies\, were asked to collect information and images on women of their communities. These pieces of information were then collected by EPL&M and UCHS and put into a design that created 16 panels each featuring a specific person or concept. Participating organizations were: Cragsmoor Historical Society; Friends of Historic Kingston; Gomez Mill House; Historic Huguenot Street; Town Historian of New Paltz; Historical Society of Woodstock; Klyne Esopus Museum; Plattekill Historical Society; Saugerties Historical Society: Stone Ridge Library; and the Ulster County Clerk’s Office. The “UC Women of Note” exhibit will travel around the county\, October 2016 through October 2017. Our hope is that viewers will connect with the organizations that submitted on behalf of these women to learn more about them.

DESCRIPTION:UCHS has been awarded the New York Council for the Humanities Action Grant for their collaborative project titled “Ulster County Women of Note”. UCHS is working in conjunction with Ellenville Public Library & Museum and the Ulster County Clerk’s Office on this very special project. The project begins with an exhibit this October of 12 panels featuring individual women of Ulster County from all walks of life that have made contributions to women’s opportunities in UC. The panels will travel around the county for the year as a full exhibit. The opening venue will be at the Matthewis Persen House & Cultural Center\, 74 John Street\, located in the Kingston Historic District. \nA second portion of the project will be a re-enactment of a Suffrage march and rally to take place in Kingston October of 2017. Updates will be made on our website as they develop.

SUMMARY:Martha Gruening of Gomez Mill House with Dr. Ruth Abrahams
DESCRIPTION:One of the most prominent Ulster County women of the early 20th century\, active in educational reform and equal rights for women\, has been all but forgotten. A lecture on September 25 at the Bevier House Museum will rectify that historical oversight. \nA lecture on the life and accomplishments of Martha Gruening (1889-1937) will be delivered by Dr. Ruth Abrahams\, Executive Director or the Gomez Mill House. (Gruening was a past resident of the Gomez Mill.) The lecture will take place on Sunday\, September 25 at 3:00 PM at the Bevier House Museum\, 2682 Route 209\, Marbletown. \nBorn into a prominent and socially progressive family\, Martha Gruening became aware early in life of social injustice. She had been inspired by her father and her siblings. Patriarch Emil Gruening ran free ophthalmology clinics for the poor and served as a trustee of The Nation\, which her brother Ernest edited. Her sister Mary ran Madison Street Settlement House in NYC; sister Clara started a birth control rights organization with Mary Ware Dennett. \nDespite her privileged background\, Martha Gruening pledged to better the lives of fellow citizens and correct the inequities of society. A graduate of Smith College and NYU Law School\, Martha engaged actively in such causes as suffragism\, the right for women to vote. She was a civil rights pioneer\, joining the NAACP and contributing to its magazine\, The Crisis. Gruening also agitated for reforming worker conditions in factories and industry. She protested against American intervention in World War I\, for which she was arrested in Philadelphia. Her progressive views were proclaimed in a series of articles she wrote for magazines of the era. At her premature death\, she was working to open a progressive school\, based on the philosophy of her mentor Will Durant on the grounds of the Gomez Mill House. \nThis lecture continues a series of UCHS events with the theme of “Celebrating Women in History\,” to commemorate the 2017 centennial of woman suffrage in New York State. \n  \nDr. Ruth Abrahams is the Executive Director of the Gomez Foundation for Mill House and the Gomez Mill House Museum and Historic Site since 1999. She served as Executive Director of the Lehman College Foundation (1993-2000)\, Vice President for Institutional Advancement at Pratt Institute (1985-1991)\, Senior Editor for Professional Development at Peat Marwick Mitchell (1980-1985)\, and Alumni Director at New York University (1975-1980). She received a Masters of Humanities (Japanese Studies) and a Ph.D. in Dance History from New York University. She taught graduate and undergraduate dance history as adjunct associate professor at New York University from 1982-1996\, and was a founding member and first President of World Dance Alliance–Americas (1990\, 1995-1999)\, an international advocacy group for dance. Abrahams sang professionally in New York from 1967-1980\, recording\, performing in light opera and off- Broadway productions\, and as a soloist and chorister in classical choral performances. \nSeating is limited so please email us for your reservation. \nFree to UCHS members\, $7 for general public\, $5 for students\, seniors and military personnel.

SUMMARY:Basketweaving Workshop with Patti Brousseau
DESCRIPTION:This year Patti will help us create a gorgeous bread basket.  The basket measures 7” x 10” with a height of 5”.  It has leather handles that are 8” in length.  The pictured basket has a ribbon around its middle. \nPatti also suggests that you bring your own bath-sized towel\, clothespins\, and an awl or screwdriver to help in the making of the basket.  If you would like your basket to have a ribbon\, please bring a yard of ribbon not more than 1” in width. \nPatti Brousseau has been weaving baskets since 1991 for her own pleasure but soon found she couldn’t stop weaving.  She soon started attending craft fairs with her baskets. After receiving so many requests to show others how to weave\, she began to teach others the skills to create their own baskets. She finds great pleasure sharing her craft with others. She loves to see their pride in the baskets they have made. \nReservations are strongly recommended. SUMMARY:John Jay: The Education of an Enlightened Constitutional Thinker
DESCRIPTION:Who was the author of New York State’s historic Constitution\, signed in Kingston? And why should we know more about him? \nThe enlightening answers will be found in this lecture to be delivered by Dr. Ray Raymond. In this lecture\, Dr. Raymond will examine how the brilliant John Jay was initially home-schooled before enrolling at King’s College (now Columbia University). This combination of private and college tutoring enabled him to master the key concepts of Enlightenment constitutional thinking. This intellectual command equipped him for the daunting task of writing New York State’s first constitution in Kingston\, New York\, the original state capitol\, thereby allowing John Jay to emerge as an important constitutional thinker. \nJay made an immense impact on the formation of our government and the US Constitution through his major contributions to the Federalist Papers. He was president of the wartime Continental Congress\, then served as secretary of foreign affairs\, precursor to secretary of state\, after the Revolutionary War ended. He was an essential diplomat whose peace negotiations with England\, leading to the Treaty of Paris\, vastly expanded U.S. territory. \nDr. Ray Raymond is a former British diplomat who held a Post-Doctoral Fellowship at Yale University in American History. He is Associate Professor of Government and History at SUNY Ulster and also teaches government and politics at the United States Military Academy\, West Point. In addition\, Dr. Raymond is a regular visiting lecturer at the US Air Force Academy. He is currently working on a new biography of John Jay as well as a collective biography of five recipients of West Point’s Ninninger Medal\, the Academy’s equivalent of the Medal of Honor. Dr. Raymond has been honored by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and by the Chief of Staff of the United States Army for his contribution to the development of the academic program at West Point. \nFree admission to the lecture for UCHS members\, $7.00 for non-members\, $5.00 for students\, seniors and military.  \n

DESCRIPTION:Excerpt from the introduction of Mr. Heppner’s book “Women of the Catskills”; \n“As a child\, I heard their names frequently – names that connected me across time and distance to relatives that went before. It wasn’t until much later that it finally dawned on me that the names I often heard discussed at family gatherings were women who\, through sheer determination\, had forged a Catskills’ life that bore witness to their strength\, ingenuity and creativity. No one ever told them it was a hard life\, though their photographs offered faces and hands that echoed the content of their days. It was the only life they knew – the one they were given – and they lived it with a dignity specific to the context of their physical surroundings. \nYears later\, as I began my pursuit of local history\, I would again remember the women of whom my family spoke. More and more\, as I read\, wrote\, conducted research and pursued the history of Woodstock\, New York\, I became aware that the history I loved so much omitted the vital role women had in crafting not only Woodstock’s story\, but that of the Catskills as well. \nMost who encountered New York State’s Catskill Mountains have done so through the idealistic works offered by the likes of Washington Irving\, Thomas Cole and others. Embracing the romantic era of the nineteenth century… \nThere is however\, a reality to the history of the Catskills that runs counter to the romanticism that shaped its popular history. For in that reality\, the history of the Catskills has seldom been told or viewed through the words\, voices or deeds of the women who struggled to forge a life within the notches and the hollows of these mountains – women who were the “others” when it came to the power exercised by a male-dominated culture; women who\, through sheer will and character\, altered the history of the Catskills in ways both large and small. \nThe women that you will meet in the pages of this book are not individuals who have become household names. …They are simply\, but importantly\, women whose stories offer a glimpse into the living done by women whose life circumstances placed them within the heart of the Catskill Mountains…. For most\, they lived not for a cause greater than themselves but to survive.” \nRichard Heppner holds the rank of Professor Emeritus at Orange County Community College where\, for twenty-five years\, he served as a faculty member\, Chair of the Arts and Communication Department\, Associate Vice President of Liberal Arts and as Vice President of Academic Affairs. \nRichard Heppner serves as town historian for Woodstock\, NY and on the board of directors for the Historical Society of Woodstock and the Woodstock Memorial Society. Over the years\, he has authored and edited numerous essays and texts on Woodstock’s unique history\, including periodic pieces for the Woodstock Times and its parent company\, Ulster Publishing. SUMMARY:Native Daughter\, The Life of Sojourner Truth in Ulster County with Anne Gordon
DESCRIPTION:Discovering and understanding the lives of slaves living in Ulster County in the 18th and 19thcenturies has always been a challenge. There are few written records and those that exist are found deep within archives and other obscure sources. Anne Gordon has undertaken just such a search uncovering copious amounts of information on the early life of one of Ulster County’s and America’s most influential and fascinating daughters\, Sojourner Truth. \nAfter she escaped slavery\, became an abolitionist and activist for women’s rights\, Sojourner Truth published her memoirs in The Narrative of Sojourner Truth: A Northern Slave.  In May of 1851\, Truth delivered a speech at the Ohio Women’s Rights Convention in Akron. The extemporaneous speech\, recorded by several observers\, would come to be known as “Ain’t I a Woman?” Following the path that she believes God set before her\, she spent the rest of her life ministering to others and fighting for these causes. \nMs. Gordon became interested in this topic when the Town of Esopus set aside land to honor Sojourner Truth. It took five years to raise the money for this project and during this time Ms. Gordon\, then the Ulster County Historian\, dove into researching the life of this famous African American abolitionist and women’s rights activist.  Sojourner Truth lived her first years as Isabella Baumfree in what was then the Town of Hurley but is now the Town of Esopus. Ms. Gordon’s research culminated in her trip to Battle Creek\, Michigan\, where Sojourner Truth is buried and where a 14 foot statue honors her. \nMs. Gordon\, a resident of the Hudson Valley for over 30 years\,  was recently named a New York Registered Public Historian. Her background in library and archival work for the City of New York and her experience in local government have been important in her work. \nFree for UCHS members\, $7.00 for non-members\, $5 for students\, seniors and the military.

SUMMARY:"Women Voted in NY - Before Columbus" with Sally Roesch Wagner\, Sponsored by New York Council for the Humanities
DESCRIPTION:This lecture kicks off a season of Ulster County Historical Society lectures and events with the theme of “Celebrating Women in History\,” to commemorate the 2017 centennial of woman suffrage in New York State. \nCenturies before the 19th Amendment allowed the American female the right to vote in 1920\, women of the Six Nation Iroquois Confederacy (the Haudenosaunee) enjoyed an egalitarian\, gender-balanced society and possessed the unprecedented responsibility of selecting their male leaders. Furthermore\, they could remove from office anyone who didn’t make wise decisions for the future\, or could prevent a man from becoming Chief if he had violated a woman. \nWhen European-immigrant women in New York State began to organize for their rights in 1848\, they took their cue from the nearby Haudenosaunee communities\, where women lived in this advanced world. Amazingly\, despite the nations’ subsequent assimilation into American life\, Haudenosaunee women still maintain much of this authority today. \nAdmission is free to this lecture\, thanks to sponsorship by the New York Council for the Humanities\, through the Public Scholars Program. Ms. Wagner will have copies of her book Sisters in Spirit (Native Voices\, 2001) for sale at this event. \nDr. Sally Roesch Wagner is the author of numerous women’s history books and articles. She wrote the faculty guide for Not for Ourselves Alone\, Ken Burns’ documentary on Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony\, and appeared in that film and other PBS women’s history programs. Her publications range in topic from pioneer women to suffragists Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Matilda Joslyn Gage. Awarded one of the first doctorates in the country for work in women’s studies (UC Santa Cruz) and a founder of one of the first college-level women’s studies programs in the United States (CSU Sacramento)\, Dr. Wagner currently serves as an adjunct faculty member in the Honors Program at Syracuse University.

SUMMARY:Enterprise & Courage\, The Civil War Years at Lake Mohonk
DESCRIPTION:While tensions brew between North and South during the 1850s\, an idea brews in the mind of an Ulster County farmer. His idea is simple yet grand: establish a must-see destination at a remarkable lake high atop the Shawangunk Mountains. \nVisitors to Mohonk Lake saw a very different place during the Civil War. Robi Josephson\, author of Mohonk: Mountain House and Preserve\, traces the earliest days of the mountain house tradition there. She tells how John F. Stokes started the mountain house tradition at Mohonk Lake\, wrestling with a rocky terrain and\, within ten years\, attracting visitors from as far as Long Island and Pennsylvania. During his lifetime\, Stokes was called a man of “enterprise and courage.” \nMs. Josephson sees those words also applying to those who scratched a living from the Shawangunks and fought a civil war far from their mountain homes. Some of those Civil War soldiers came from now-vanished villages near Mohonk. When the war ended in 1865\, survivors returned to the mountain\, and Americans—1\,400 that year—celebrated with a visit to the Lake Mohonk House of John F. Stokes. Such was his hospitality that guests dubbed Mohonk’s host “Uncle John.” By decade’s end\, Mohonk Lake was as popular as ever\, but in 1869 Uncle John sold out to Albert K. Smiley\, a Quaker and educator from Providence\, Rhode Island. Albert and his twin brother\, Alfred H. Smiley\, thus began a new chapter at Mohonk Lake\, one their descendants continue more than 140 years later. \nRobi Josephson will be selling and signing copies of her book Mohonk\, a picture history in Arcadia Publishing’s Images of America series published in 2002. She will also have available An Unforgiving Land: Hardscrabble Life in the Trapps\, a Vanished Shawangunk Mountain Hamlet\, co-authored with Bob Larsen (Black Dome Press 2013). \nAttendees are also invited to view Bevier House Museum’s collection of Civil War artifacts related to Ulster County on the museum’s second floor.
