DESCRIPTION:This year’s Garden Tour is sponsored by the Rondout Valley Business Association and Ulster County Historical Society. A must-attend event for gardeners of all levels and interests! \nOur aim each year is to feature different gardens that show a range of ideas and approaches to designing and landscaping a yard. Some may have a mix of perennials and annuals\, others may feature more greenery and shade-loving plants and another one might have ponds or garden structures as highlights. \nAs in previous years\, the tour is a self-guided exploration that is sure to be a fun\, inspirational and educational event for the gardening enthusiast. \nReception at 4pm at the Bevier House Museum will end the day\n \nAdvance tickets are $25 and are available online at the RVBA website HERE\, or they may be purchased in person at Victoria Gardens in Rosendale. \nTickets are $30 on the day of the event and may be purchased at Davenport Farms (3411 US Route 209\, Stone Ridge) and Victoria Gardens (1 Cottekill Road\, Rosendale)\, which will serve as the tour’s starting locations. \nFor more information and updates visit us on Facebook! \nPhotos seen here are from the 2016 Garden Tour.

SUMMARY:Elverhoj: Ulster County's Arts & Crafts Colony at Milton-on-Hudson\, 1912-1934 with Dr. William Rhoads
DESCRIPTION:After Woodstock’s Byrdcliffe\, Elverhoj was Ulster County’s second important Arts & Crafts colony. Established by two Danish-American silversmiths\, Anders H. Andersen and Johannes Morton\, Elverhoj (Danish for “hill of the fairies”) was known for jewelry and silverware designed and made by individual artists\, but also for etchings and paintings by Ralph Pearson and James Scott. Elverhoj was publicized in Gustav Stickley’s Craftsman magazine and awarded a gold medal at the 1915 Panama- \nPacific Exposition in San Francisco. In the 1920s theatrical productions attracted audiences from the region\, but in 1934\, during the Depression\, Andersen lost the property. It was purchased in 1938 by followers of Father Divine\, the charismatic black leader\, and it became one of his most popular missions. \nA special exhibit on Elverhoj\, will feature items from the collection of Vivian Wadlin. Ms Wadlin’s collection holds a diversity of book plates created by artist Dard Hunter. Hunter was a papermaker that had his mill at what is known as the Gomez Mill House in Milton. The collection also has invitations to theatre productions held at Elverhoj and other events held at the colony. Several small water colors and other paper art will be on display. Craft pieces\, belonging to Dr. and Mrs. Rhoads and art work from dealer\, Sanford Levy will also be part of the exhibit. The exhibit will be on display at the Bevier House Museum through the end of July\, 2019.

DESCRIPTION:Ulster County Historical Society will hold a Historic Preservation Expo on March 30\, 2019. The event is designed as a community information program in response to inquiries we have received in the last year concerning resources for historic preservation. The expo will include trades people\, craftspeople\, and designers. Additionally\, commissioners from Marbletown preservation commission will be available for information on their services. \nPresentations will be offered over the day: \n11:30 am – Frances Gubler of The Preservation League of New York State presents “Road Map to Preservation\,” covering the incentives available for property owners. \n1pm – Preservation consultant\, Ken Follett presents “Teamwork in Historic Conservation\,” on the value of professional teams working on historic structures.. The Ulster County Clerk’s office will have information on researching deeds for historic properties. \nThe mission of the expo is to provide information to current owners and potential purchasers of historic property in Ulster County\, and realtors that have questions on preservation options and opportunities. Participation is open to tradesman and artisans who provide relevant services. As this is an informational event\, UCHS does not endorse the services of any of the participants\, but all are well experienced in their fields. SUMMARY:Cragsmoor and It's Art Colony with Hattie Grifo
DESCRIPTION:As we continue with the celebration of art history in Ulster County\, we invite you to the presentation on Cragsmoor and its mountainous refuge of artists. Hatti Grifo\, recently retired Cragsmoor Library Director\, will present this PowerPoint program. \nCragsmoor is a tiny hamlet in the lower Shawangunk ridge just outside the village of Ellenville\, where Sam’s Point and Bear Hill frame each end of “The Mountain.” Frederick Samuel Dellenbaugh\, one of the more renowned artists moving to the mountaintop\, built a home for his family in 1892\, named “Endridge.” \nDellenbaugh designed two of the more public buildings in Cragsmoor\, the library housed in a beautiful building with unique character. The hidden treasure known as the Chapel of the Holy Name Episcopal Church (aka Stone Church)\, is also a Dellenbaugh design. The natural beauty of Cragsmoor makes it a beloved and unique place\, which has drawn the artistic and talented for many years. The artist population has continued to increase over time and remains an inspirational place. Many other visitors are attracted to Cragsmoor for its natural beauty\, vacation rentals\, and weddings and special events at the Stone Church\, the Historical Society\, and the natural wonders. \nHattie Grifo\, is a long time resident of Cragsmoor\, where her family first had a summer home but made a permanent move to the mountain in 1966. They bought the home of Frederick Dellenbaugh\, from which Grifo moved when she married. Hattie began as a volunteer and trustee of the Cragsmoor Free Library\, eventually becoming the Director on January 1\, 2005. After an enjoyable tenure of just under 12 years\, she retired in September of 2016. Ms. Grifo is also a member of the Cragsmoor Historical Society for which she created this presentation “Cragsmoor and Its Art Colony\,” She is currently helping with the renovations of the building that houses the Cragsmoor Historical Society. \nLecture free for UCHS members\, $10 for non-members.

SUMMARY:History of the Woodstock Art Colonies with Richard Heppner
DESCRIPTION:Join us in celebrating the rich history of artists in Ulster County. We know much about the Hudson River School of art\, but the movement that began in the early 20th century with art colonies forming in our area are still hidden in a mist of conjecture and hearsay. \nFor May – July\, UCHS presents a special exhibit featuring the art of area artists from the early 20th century. The exhibit will have pieces from the collections of the Historical Society of Woodstock and the Cragsmoor Historical Society. The exhibit will be open to the public weekends\, 11-5pm. \nRichard Heppner of the Historical Society of Woodstock presents our first lecture on the subject of art colonies. For his presentation on the growth of Woodstock as an American art colony during the first half of the 20th century\, he asks us to imagine…. \n“On a spring day in 1902\, a man by the name of Bolton Brown emerged from the thicket below the summit of Overlook Mountain and first viewed Woodstock and the expanse below. Hired by Ralph Whitehead to seek a physical location that would match Whitehead’s vision for an art colony\, Brown\, upon viewing the expanse before him\, wrote of that moment\, “Exactly here the story of modern Woodstock really begins.” \nFrom the founding of the Byrdcliffe and Maverick colonies to the arrival of the Art Students League and the impact of the WPA on the arts in Woodstock\, the talk will examine the transition of a small\, rural town into a community that counted among its citizens some of the country’s most creative individuals. SUMMARY:Historic House Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join Ulster County HS in their first historic house tour. The house tour will be the largest fundraising event the organization has undertaken in recent years. Planning began in 2017 and several generous homeowners will be participating in this distinguished line up properties. All buildings are located between Kripplebush\, Stone Ridge\, High Falls and Hurley.  Among the seven houses and two barns in the tour are the Thomas Chambers House\, \, the Tully barn\, the Rydant barn and a building formerly housing the “Teahouse in the Garden.” \nThe house tour takes place on Saturday\, April 28\, 2018 between 10 am and 4pm. Tickets can be purchased in advance are $25 for nonmembers and $20 for UCHS members. Tickets will also be available for purchase on the day of the event\, $30 for nonmembers and $25 for UCHS members. To begin the tour all participants will come first to the Bevier House Museum\, at 2682 Route 209\, Kingston\, to receive their wrist bands for entry into the buildings and tour maps. There will be a reception for attendees at 4pm at the museum after the close of the tour. SUMMARY:Unearthing the Hidden History of Our Modern Highways
DESCRIPTION:Our guest speaker\, Myles Putman\, will revisit a timely transportation topic with an illustrated presentation\, using a number of case studies\, from “projects in your neighborhood” a hundred years ago to the West Shore “corridor of conflict”. The talk will describe the physical and technological changes in road systems since the late 1880’s\, also highlighting the research methods and tools with accompanying pitfalls and mistakes in the interpretation of the records and documents. \n  \nPutman is a self-admitted “road-geek\,” who has been studying and investigating roads\, particularly the early state highways of New York and the county road systems in Ulster County\, for many years. Myles is a member of the Town of Saugerties Preservation Commission\, a member of the Steering Committee of the Friends of Historic Saugerties\, and serves as Vice-President of Ars Choralis. SUMMARY:Emily Rockwell Crane Chadbourne (1871–1964): Reflections on a life of philanthropy and influence from Chicago\, Paris and the Hudson Valley.
DESCRIPTION:Emily Rockwell Crane Chadbourne (1871–1964) was the daughter of Richard Teller Crane and Mary Prentice Crane. Emily\, well-known for art collection and philanthropy\, sat on the board of governors for the Art Institute of Chicago\, was a fellow in perpetuity of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City\, and former president of the Senate House Museum in Kingston\, NY. She had a residence and shared global interests with her life partner\, Ms. Ellen LaMotte\, in Ulster County at Sally Tack Tavern\, Stone Ridge\, NY from 1917 until her death in 1964. Using never before seen photographs and primary documents\, this presentation will highlight some of Emily’s unique contributions to Ulster County and more globally to art\, historic preservation\, and women in the board room and in political discourse. \n  \nTimothy Hunt\, PhD\, is a research scientist at Columbia University\, School of Social Work\, and family therapist in clinical practice for over 26 years. He is the current resident of Tack Tavern from 1995 to present\, and commissioner and Co-Chair of the Marbletown Historic Preservation Commission since 2001. \nCynthia Wachtell\, PhD\, is a research associate professor of American Studies and the founding director of the S. Daniel Abraham Honors Program at Yeshiva University. She earned her PhD in the History of American Civilization from Harvard University and MA degree in American Studies from Yale University. SUMMARY:"Women on Wheels: How Gilded Age Women Found Freedom Through Bicycling"
DESCRIPTION:Ellen Gruber Garvey joins us through the Humanities NY Public Speaker Program \nWhen women and girls first rode bicycles in large numbers in the 1890s\, they celebrated their new freedom to move around in the world. Susan B. Anthony said she stood and rejoiced\, “every time I see a woman ride by on a wheel…the picture of free\, untrammeled womanhood.” She thought bicycling had “done more to emancipate women than anything else in the world.” Is it surprising that conservatives panicked at visions of women riding alone\, with other women\, or with unsuitable men\, and campaigned to stop them? \nBicycling women did not want to give up their new mobility\, and there were plenty of arguments back and forth. Some claimed that women would damage themselves by acquiring a “bicycle face\,” or would get sexual pleasure from bicycling — and thus ruin their reproductive capacities. Although this seems like something that happened long ago\, women\, especially\, are often still discouraged from physical activity and mobility in the US and in other countries. \nDuring this talk\, Ellen Gruber Garvey will invite the audience to discuss ways they were encouraged to participate in physical activity or discouraged from it\, and how they responded. (For a large audience\, we can first do this in small groups\, or through writing.) We will consider how the automobile\, which followed the bicycle as an agent of individual mobility\, has reduced Americans’ physical activity. \nEllen is Professor of English at New Jersey City University\, where she co-edits the journal Transformations: The Journal of Inclusive Scholarship and Pedagogy. She recently taught for a semester in Paris\, as Visiting Professor at the Université Paris 8/Vincennes-St. Denis. Her doctorate is from the University of Pennsylvania\, her MA from the University of Massachusetts\, and her BA from Empire State College\, SUNY. Her recent book\, Writing with Scissors: American Scrapbooks from the Civil War to the Harlem Renaissance\, has won four awards\, including the Society of American Archivists’ Waldo Gifford Leland Award and the Institute for Humanities Research Award. \nThis is a free event\, sponsored by Humanities New York \n \n

SUMMARY:Unearthing our Past: The Archaeology of Kingston\, NY
DESCRIPTION:As far back as 12\,000 years ago\, Native American tribes thrived here in Ulster County – and thanks to ongoing archeological digs\, we are still learning about their lives. Guiding college students through these important excavations is SUNY New Paltz professor Joseph E. Diamond\, Ph.D.\, who will deliver a lecture on their findings for The Ulster County Historical Society.\nProfessor Diamond will present an overview of local archaeological sites that have been investigated within the city of Kingston since the early 20th century\, followed by a discussion of the most significant sites and what they tell us about the earliest native settlers to this area. He will review evidence gleaned from these sites that document Native American occupation beginning as early as 12\,000 years ago and lasting until contact with the Dutch in 1609. He will also discuss unearthed Colonial-era Dutch and English materials – and later industrial materials from the 19th century. Prof. Diamond will point out Native American artifacts currently on display at the Bevier House Museum from the Ulster County Historical Society Society’s permanent collection.\nJoseph E. Diamond is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at SUNY New Paltz. He holds an MA from New York University\, and a Ph.D. from SUNY Albany. Prof. Diamond’s area of focus includes historic and prehistoric archaeology\, prehistoric ceramic analysis\, historic glass and ceramic analysis. The first is a special exhibit titled “Ulster County Women of Note\,” highlighting Ulster County women\, from all walks life\, who exhibited great commitment to their communities and their causes. \nIn the spirit of collaboration\, organizations such as schools\, libraries\, historic site and societies\, were asked to collect information and images on women of their communities. These pieces of information were then collected by EPL&M and UCHS and put into a design that created 16 panels each featuring a specific person or concept. Participating organizations were: Cragsmoor Historical Society; Friends of Historic Kingston; Gomez Mill House; Historic Huguenot Street; Town Historian of New Paltz; Historical Society of Woodstock; Klyne Esopus Museum; Plattekill Historical Society; Saugerties Historical Society: Stone Ridge Library; and the Ulster County Clerk’s Office. The “UC Women of Note” exhibit will travel around the county\, October 2016 through October 2017. DESCRIPTION:UCHS has been awarded the New York Council for the Humanities Action Grant for their collaborative project titled “Ulster County Women of Note”. UCHS is working in conjunction with Ellenville Public Library & Museum and the Ulster County Clerk’s Office on this very special project. The project begins with an exhibit this October of 12 panels featuring individual women of Ulster County from all walks of life that have made contributions to women’s opportunities in UC. The panels will travel around the county for the year as a full exhibit. The opening venue will be at the Matthewis Persen House & Cultural Center\, 74 John Street\, located in the Kingston Historic District. \nA second portion of the project will be a re-enactment of a Suffrage march and rally to take place in Kingston October of 2017. SUMMARY:Martha Gruening of Gomez Mill House with Dr. Ruth Abrahams
DESCRIPTION:One of the most prominent Ulster County women of the early 20th century\, active in educational reform and equal rights for women\, has been all but forgotten. A lecture on September 25 at the Bevier House Museum will rectify that historical oversight. \nA lecture on the life and accomplishments of Martha Gruening (1889-1937) will be delivered by Dr. Ruth Abrahams\, Executive Director or the Gomez Mill House. (Gruening was a past resident of the Gomez Mill.) The lecture will take place on Sunday\, September 25 at 3:00 PM at the Bevier House Museum\, 2682 Route 209\, Marbletown. \nBorn into a prominent and socially progressive family\, Martha Gruening became aware early in life of social injustice. She had been inspired by her father and her siblings. Patriarch Emil Gruening ran free ophthalmology clinics for the poor and served as a trustee of The Nation\, which her brother Ernest edited. Her sister Mary ran Madison Street Settlement House in NYC; sister Clara started a birth control rights organization with Mary Ware Dennett. \nDespite her privileged background\, Martha Gruening pledged to better the lives of fellow citizens and correct the inequities of society. A graduate of Smith College and NYU Law School\, Martha engaged actively in such causes as suffragism\, the right for women to vote. She was a civil rights pioneer\, joining the NAACP and contributing to its magazine\, The Crisis. Gruening also agitated for reforming worker conditions in factories and industry. She protested against American intervention in World War I\, for which she was arrested in Philadelphia. Her progressive views were proclaimed in a series of articles she wrote for magazines of the era. At her premature death\, she was working to open a progressive school\, based on the philosophy of her mentor Will Durant on the grounds of the Gomez Mill House. \nThis lecture continues a series of UCHS events with the theme of “Celebrating Women in History\,” to commemorate the 2017 centennial of woman suffrage in New York State. \n  \nDr. Ruth Abrahams is the Executive Director of the Gomez Foundation for Mill House and the Gomez Mill House Museum and Historic Site since 1999. She served as Executive Director of the Lehman College Foundation (1993-2000)\, Vice President for Institutional Advancement at Pratt Institute (1985-1991)\, Senior Editor for Professional Development at Peat Marwick Mitchell (1980-1985)\, and Alumni Director at New York University (1975-1980). She received a Masters of Humanities (Japanese Studies) and a Ph.D. in Dance History from New York University. She taught graduate and undergraduate dance history as adjunct associate professor at New York University from 1982-1996\, and was a founding member and first President of World Dance Alliance–Americas (1990\, 1995-1999)\, an international advocacy group for dance. SUMMARY:Basketweaving Workshop with Patti Brousseau
DESCRIPTION:This year Patti will help us create a gorgeous bread basket.  The basket measures 7” x 10” with a height of 5”.  It has leather handles that are 8” in length.  The pictured basket has a ribbon around its middle. \nPatti also suggests that you bring your own bath-sized towel\, clothespins\, and an awl or screwdriver to help in the making of the basket.  If you would like your basket to have a ribbon\, please bring a yard of ribbon not more than 1” in width. \nPatti Brousseau has been weaving baskets since 1991 for her own pleasure but soon found she couldn’t stop weaving.  She soon started attending craft fairs with her baskets. After receiving so many requests to show others how to weave\, she began to teach others the skills to create their own baskets. She finds great pleasure sharing her craft with others. She loves to see their pride in the baskets they have made. \nReservations are strongly recommended. DESCRIPTION:BBQFlier \nUlster County Historical Society and the Saugerties Historical Society\, bring you an afternoon of great food and wonderful local musicians. This is the first time UCHS and SHS have worked together on a fundraising event that is aimed at family fun. Local musicians such as The Bondville Boys\, Katie Hoffstatter\, Talking Fire  and others will entertain you\, while you enjoy great pork BBQ cooked by Charlie Fisher and Dan Hauspurg\, both seasoned BBQ chefs! Local grocers Price Chopper\, Adams Fairacre Farms\, Stewarts Shops\, Saunderskill Farms and local restaurants such as the Village Dinner\, have sponsored this event to make sure all the best BBQ fixin’s  are on the menu.  Menu will include roast pig\, sauerkraut & pineapple\, corn on the cob\, salads\, soft drinks and dessert. \nPricing is $20/adult advance purchase; $25/adult at the door and $10/child\, aged 5-10. Tickets will be for sale at several locations; Saugerties Historical Society – Kiersted House\, 119 Main St.\, Saugerties; Town & Country Liquors\, 330 Route 212\, Saugerties; PC Smith Co.\, 227 Main St. Saugerties; UCHS Bevier House Museum\, 2682 Route 209\, Kingston\, and on their website; www.ulstercountyhs.org\,; Saunderskill Farms on Route 209 in Accord\, NY; and Stone Ridge Wine & Spirits\, 3853 Main St. Stone Ridge. \nThe village of Saugerties will be holding the annual Sawyer Car show the same day\, so bring the family and have a day of recreation helping two great organizations. \nYou may purchase tickets through the website by visiting our Donation page.
