DESCRIPTION:To close our Ulster in Maps season\, the Sunday Salon Series turns to one of the most remarkable land grants in New York history: the 1708 Hardenbergh Patent. Originally pitched to the Colonial Government as a request for a “small tract of land\,” it ballooned into a grant larger than the State of Rhode Island. Presenter Thomas Soja will unveil a long-lost 1749 survey map\, challenge long-accepted historical narratives\, and resolve a centuries-old question about the Hardenbergh claim to Mesopotamia and Point Mountain at the “Wedding of the Waters\,” where the East and West Branches of the Delaware River meet. \n \nThomas Soja and his wife moved from New York City to Delaware County in 1999\, settling on land within the Hardenbergh Patent. A chance inquiry into riverfront property sparked his fascination with the 1708 royal grant and launched a decades-long search for a legendary 1749 survey map. SUMMARY:Shape Note Singing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This experiential workshop\, which will be held in the historic Bevier House\, offers an introduction to the rich and stirring tradition of shape-note singing\, from its 18th-century origins to its 21st-century revival. Participants will learn the basics of this distinctive style of four-part a cappella harmony using geometric shapes to represent musical notes—a system once common in early American singing schools. \nThe method\, which emphasizes powerful\, communal sound over polished performance\, is remarkably accessible to beginners and has helped people of all backgrounds quickly learn to sing in harmony without prior musical training. The class will follow the time-honored “singing school” approach: starting with singing the shapes (fa\, sol\, la\, mi)\, adding parts in harmony\, and finally singing the words. \nThis technique\, which began in religious contexts in 19th-century America\, has found new life in secular community spaces during the current revival. Described as “barnyard Baroque\,” shape-note singing continues to shake floorboards and move hearts. The revival—sparked by grassroots enthusiasm\, folk traditions\, and even Hollywood films like Cold Mountain—has inspired weekly and monthly gatherings throughout the mid-Hudson Valley and beyond. \nYour instructor is retired history teacher James D. Ulrich\, who has been singing this music for over four decades in five states. While not a formal expert\, Jim brings deep lived experience and a heartfelt love of the tradition\, and he will be joined by a few proficient leaders to help guide the session. \nThis workshop is open to all ages and skill levels. SUMMARY:Vintage Base Ball Game
DESCRIPTION:Who better than the Ulster County Historical Society to take you out to the ballgame and back in time? \nOn Saturday\, August 23 at 1 p.m.\, the Ulster County Historical Society will sponsor the third annual vintage baseball game at Tongore Park\, also known as Marbletown Town Park\, at 350 Tongore Road\, Stone Ridge. \nStep back in time and see how base ball was played 150 years ago by the Kingston Guards. The game is sponsored by the Ulster County Historical Society\, whose mission is to make local history come alive. \nThis vintage base ball game features rules from the 1800s\, as was a common occurrence for many years between teams from neighboring farm communities\, villages\, and cities all over the United States. The uniforms and rules reflect the historical rules of the grand old game. Among the novel rules for fans to enjoy: \n-Foul balls do not count as strikes.\n-No gloves worn by fielders.\n-If a pitch is too close to call\, the umpire can rule “no call” and it’s a do-over.\n-If a batter is hit by a pitch\, it just counts as a ball and the at-bat continues.\n-Fielders can catch a fly ball on one hop for an out (it’s tougher than it sounds). \nCome one\, come all for old-time family fun at the old ball game!

Mr. Levy be speaking about three old friends from Kingston\, NY\, whose artwork he has studied and enjoyed over the years: Julia McEntee Dillon\, Jervis McEntee and Joseph Tubby. These “friends” were all born in the Mid -19th Century in the Rondout area of Kingston\, and their families were active members of the community. Different aspects of the Rondout landscape and views are depicted in much of their artwork. He will be discussing their artistic development in the world of late 19th and early 20th Century art.  \nRefreshments and light food will be served.

DESCRIPTION:Behind every artifact there is a human story that is essential for an accurate interpretation of its significance.  Diaries\, family correspondence\, newspaper accounts\, and previous historical research on an artifact’s period and place of origin help historians to understand the context behind its purpose and impact. The recent popularity of memoir adds yet another highly personal source of information to the mix.  Join us for a conversation and workshop with author and local historian\, Bruce Whistance\, about the value of memoir in building a more nuanced view of our moment in time for the historical record.  \nAbout the speaker:\nBruce Whistance has lived in Ulster County since 1954 in the towns of Hurley\, Ulster\, and Rosendale and has a Master of Science in Computer Science from Union College.  He has had a diverse employment background including jobs as a farm worker\, filling station attendant\, restaurant waiter\, factory worker\, teaching assistant\, electronic engineer\, and IBM programming manager.  Working with the family antiques business he developed a keen sense of history and has served on the Historic Preservation Commission in the Town of Hurley.  He has partnered with his wife Gail in creating exhibitions at the Hurley Heritage Society Museum.

DESCRIPTION:Marissa Marvelli is an independent historic preservation consultant based in Ulster County. In addition to conducting a wide range of cultural resource surveys and drafting National Register nominations\, Marissa is frequently hired to consult on historic rehabilitation tax credit projects. In this talk\, she will cover the financial benefits of listing significant individual properties and historic districts in the National Register of Historic Places. Listing unlocks tax credit and grant programs for historic homeowners\, commercial developers\, non-profits\, and local governments.

DESCRIPTION:Runaway ads were the first published slavery narratives—told by masters. In recent decades scholars have learned to read them closely for individuals’ stories as well as to aggregate them for the purposes of social history. In Defiance does both. Co-author and New Paltz Town Historian\, Susan Stessin-Cohn\, will discuss the research that went into writing the book and some of the stories that unfolded.

SUMMARY:WWII Female Air Force Service Pilots
DESCRIPTION:Over 1\,000 women flew military aircraft in WWII as Women Air Force Service Pilots\, or WASP. Author Margaret DiBenedetto is the daughter of WASP\, Ruth Franckling Reynolds. Ruth grew up delivering milk to the residents of Woodstock and earned her pilot license in Kingston\, becoming the first female commercial pilot in Ulster County. During her time as a WASP\, Ruth ferried almost every type of WWII transport and combat aircraft from manufacturing plants to air bases around the country. By incorporating past aviation history with present-day\, strong\, female role models\, DiBenedetto wrote her novel\, Silver Dollar Girls\, with the hope of educating a wider\, younger audience about the WASP and their role in WWII. Come experience the WASP program through the eyes of a pilot’s daughter.

SUMMARY:2024 Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the opening of a new exhibition of artwork\, artifacts\, memorabilia\, photographs\, wood block prints and encaustics by printmaker and family historian Beverly Bennett. In the Shadow of Mohonk: A Collection of the Yeaple Family Art and Heirlooms tells the story of the long history of the Yeaple family in Ulster County\, of which Bennett is an 8th generation member. The exhibition not only pays homage to the Yeaple’s historical presence in the area\, but also encourages us to look more carefully at our own ancestry and to consider our role in preserving the past.  \nIn addition to Bennett’s exhibition\, UCHS will also feature Gifts to the Society\, a display of some of the more unique\, curious and puzzling objects in the society’s collection. This show will offer visitors an encounter with never-before displayed artifacts and the opportunity to participate in solving some of the mysteries that surround them.  \nLight refreshments will be served.
