SUMMARY:Luis Moses Gomez: Refugee\, Merchant\, and the Oldest Jewish Dwelling in North America
DESCRIPTION:He arrived in New York as a refugee — a Sephardic Jew fleeing religious persecution in Europe — and became one of the most consequential merchants of eighteenth-century colonial America. In 1716\, Luis Moses Gomez purchased land near Marlboro in what was then Ulster County\, positioning himself as a vital intermediary between Hudson Valley farmers and artisans and the expanding forces of the market revolution. The stone structure he built still stands today as the oldest surviving Jewish dwelling in North America — three centuries of history embedded in a single building\, bearing witness to the American Revolution\, the region’s industrialization\, and the extraordinary arc of one man’s journey from persecution to prosperity. Alex Prizgintas traces Gomez’s story and the remarkable property he left behind — a lens through which the full complexity of arrival\, resilience\, and belonging in the Hudson Valley comes into focus. \n \nAbout the Presenter\nAlex Prizgintas is a Hudson Valley historian\, author\, musician\, and preservationist whose work is rooted in a lifelong passion for the region he calls home. He serves as Town Historian of both Woodbury and Tuxedo in Orange County — a rare distinction — and as President of the Woodbury Historical Society\, a role he first aspired to at age eleven when he became the organization’s youngest member. He earned his B.A. from Marist College summa cum laude\, with a concentration in Public History and a minor in Hudson River Valley Studies\, and his M.P.A. from Marist\, and has published scholarly work in the peer-reviewed Hudson River Valley Review. A board member of the Association of Public Historians of New York State\, he has built collaborative relationships with historical societies and museums across the Hudson Valley. SUMMARY:Strings Across the Sea: The Dulcimer\, Immigration\, and the Music That Traveled to America
DESCRIPTION:Every instrument tells a migration story. The Appalachian mountain dulcimer — sweet-voiced\, lap-held\, distinctly American — traces its roots across the Atlantic to the Scottish hummel\, the Norwegian langeleik\, the German scheitholt\, and the French épinette des Vosges. The Scotch-Irish and German immigrants who carried these instruments to the New World in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries couldn’t have known they were planting the seeds of an American musical tradition that would endure for centuries. In this concert\, the Hogfiddle Consort — a intimate ensemble drawn from the New York Dulcimer Orchestra\, based right here in Ulster County — brings that tradition to life through a program woven together with story. Members of the ensemble will share the history behind the music in between their repertoire\, where these sounds came from\, who carried them here\, how they transformed in a new land\, and what they left behind in the American ear. It is a concert and a history lesson in one — the perfect closing note for a season devoted to the stories of those who came to Ulster County and made it their own.\n\nAbout the Performers \nThe Hogfiddle Consort is a smaller ensemble drawn from the New York Dulcimer Orchestra\, a twenty-player performing organization based in New Paltz\, Ulster County and currently directed by Patricia Curtis. Founded by Carol Walker\, a nationally recognized\, award-winning mountain dulcimer teacher\, performer\, and arranger\, NYDO and the Hogfiddle Consort have performed at festivals\, libraries\, schools\, and community venues across the Northeast. The Consort’s repertoire ranges from classical favorites and Celtic traditional tunes to American folk songs and selections from the Great American Songbook.
